Description

Actinotus is a perennial that grows to 50 cm high and produces large, cream starry daisy-like flowers.

There are 11 species in the Australian genus Actinotus, of which the best known is Actinotus helianthi—a favorite wildflower native to the open woodlands of the sandstone country around Sydney where it makes a great display in late spring and summer.

The woolly appearance of the soft silvery-grey foliage and the flowerheads are both due to a covering of dense hairs, which help the plant reduce moisture loss in a dry climate.

Growing

Requiring a mild climate, full sun and very well drained sandy soil, Actinotus can be grown in poor, scarcely water-retentive soils.

Plants are is usually treated as a biennials. Propagate from seed or stem cuttings in spring or summer. Germination varies from two weeks to one year.
