Description

Ideal for borders, edging, between bricks or stones and for rockeries and for mass planting for 'carpeting' effects.

Alyssum is a dwarf bush about 10 cm - 20 cm in height with masses of tiny white flowers. It blooms all year and in most climates.

Varieties come in white and purple and combinations of the two. There is also a somewhat taller (30cm) yellow variety that only flowers in spring.

Growing

Most prolific in full sun, but will also tolerate semi-shade.

Grows well in all types of soil except in damp conditions, thus needs good drainage.

Propagation by seed and almost any time of the year. In colder climates it is best to sow during spring or autumn. Once established it will self seed and spread rapidly.

Water regularly in dry weather (a good soaking once or twice a week is better than frequent sprinkling).

Feed with liquid fertiliser as the plants grow, which will promote flowering for longer periods. Spent flowers should be cut back where a neater appearance is required.
