Description
Closely related to Cosmos, this genus of around 200 species
of annuals, perennials, subshrubs and shrubs occurs in most
parts of the world except very cold regions. In most countries
this genus is represented only by a weedy species. The majority
are native to Mexico and adjacent regions of the Americas. The
plants have erect leafy stems, usually much branched, with opposite
pairs of leaves that are generally compound or deeply divided.
Yellow daisy flowers (occasionally red to purple, for example,
the purplish pink Bidens aequisquamea), mostly with very few
but broad ray-florets, open in a long succession and are followed
by burr-like seed heads containing narrow seeds, each tipped
with 2-barbed bristles that can stick to clothing and the fur
of animals.

Growing
Plant in full sun or morning shade, and water well in summer.
They are very easily grown in any well-drained soil. Although
hardiness varies with the species, most will withstand moderate
frosts.
Propagate from seed or cuttings, or by division, depending
on the growth form.
