Description

A fragrant spring-flowering perennial that grows to 60cm and is very suitable to bedding or borders or for planting in clumps in the garden.

Flowers are pinkish lavender or russet shades like yellow, brown, mahogany and deep ruby-red.

Growing

Cheiranthus prefer a warm sunny aspect sheltered from strong winds. They respond to friable fertile and well-drained soil.

Garden beds should be prepared well before planting by adding liberal quantities of compost or animal manure and Gro-Plus fertiliser. Unless you have alkaline soil, it is also advisable to add 1-2 cups of lime per square meter as well. Mix all the additives into the soil to a depth of about 20 cm and leave in this state for 4-6 weeks before planting.

Propagate by seed from midsummer to autumn to produce plants that flower in winter and early spring.
