Description

These 50-120 cm high plants have attractive fern-like foliage and make an ideal background for low-growing plants. Daisy-like flowers measure 7-8cm across and are available in every colour except blue.

Flowers last long and make for great indoor decoration as cut flowers.

As one of the hardiest summer-flowering annuals Cosmos species will thrive in most parts of Australia except the very dry inland.

Growing

Cosmos will grow on a wide range of soils, but respond best to well drained friable soils or sandy loam. They need full sun and because of their height should be sheltered from strong winds. However, if planted closely together, they will support each other.

Cosmos ideal for dry conditions, but will produce larger blooms if watered regularly.

Propagation from seed in spring and through to summer. Seedlings are best raised in garden beds, boxes or punnets before planting out. Transplant to about 45 cm apart. In hot weather mulching with grass clippings will keep the roots cool and moist.

Colours include plain white, rose, crimson, red, orange and yellow.

Varieties:
Mammoth Single Mixed grows to 120 cm and has large rose and crimson flowers with a sprinkling of white.

Brightlights grows to 75cm, is an early variety with attractive foliage and masses of double flowers in red, orange and yellow shades.
