Description

There some 60 species, tough-leaved as well as some with softer and lusher foliage. Although they resemble and are sometimes referred to as "palms", they are not related to palms at all.

Growing

There are tough as well as soft leaved varieties.

Full sun for the tough leaved varieties that naturally grow in open habitats.

Semi-shaded and sheltered positions for the soft leaved species, as they grow naturally as understorey plants.

Rule of thumb: the tougher the leaves, the more sun they will tolerate!

Fairly adaptable in well drained soils.

Propagation from seed.
