Duranta

Common name: Pigeon Berry,
                        Sky Blue Flower

Description

Except for those growing in cold climates, Durantas are evergreen shrubs or small trees from the American tropics and subtropics. The 30 or so species have rather small and often toothed leaves and bear blue, white or violet flowers in summer which are followed by firm, fleshy, orange berries that are poisonous.
The cultivar 'Sheena's Gold' is a drought hardy variety.

Duranta erecta is a 5m (15 ft) tree form with a single trunk and arching, spiny branches and mauve-blue inflorescence from early summer to autumn. The yellow fruits overlap with the flowers in late summer and autumn and often persist into winter.
The cultivar ‘Variegata’ has cream-edged leaves. ‘Alba’ is a white variety.

Growing

Duranta species are vigorous growers and easy to care for, but do need a frost-free environment. Grow them in a fertile, well-drained soil and in full sun.

They make useful hedges since they can be trained to become small trees or kept trimmed as shrubs.

Propagate from seed or cuttings. (Soft-tip cuttings in spring or hardwood cuttings in autumn)

Potential Pests: Whiteflies.
