Description

This native to Madagascar is a low growing succulent species. It is an evergreen, spreading or climbing shrub with few leaves but many thorns. Grows to about 1m (3ft) and pairs of rounded scarlet bracts make what look like flattened clusters of four-petalled flowers throughout much of the year.

The sparse foliage on its extremely thorny stems consists of bright green leaves near the branch tips.

Euphorbia milii var.splendii is the most commonly cultivated. This specimen forms a mound of tangled branches up to 60cm (2ft) in length with pinkish red flower bracts.

Euphorbia milii 'Lutea' has cream bracts.

Growing

Warm-temperate to tropical climates. Adapts to most soils.

Best grown as a specimen plant in an out-of-the-way corner or in a pot away from paths and steps to avoid potential injury!
