Description

Evergreen shrub from subtropical Brazil and Argentina. Reaches about 3m (10ft) with a similar spread, but can grow twice as tall in sheltered positions.

Also known as "Acca", Feijoas are grown for their showy, edible flowers and fruits. The fruits appear only after a hot summer and may be damaged by autumn frosts. The oval, glossy green leaves have a silvery underside.

This species can be pruned into a single-trunked small tree or it can be clipped as a hedge. The flowers, carried on the new season’s growth, have red petals that are white underneath and almost overshadowed by prominent, dark red stamens. The elongated fruit grow up to 10cm (4in) long, have a sweet-tangy flavor and are eaten raw or made into jam and preserves.

Growing

Plant in well-drained, humus-rich soil ina sunny position and supply with ample water while the fruit matures.

Very tolerant of exposure and salt-laden winds near coastal areas.

Feijoas prefer a warm, frost-free climate, but can grow in areas with very mild frosts in a sheltered, sunny spot. In colder climates they are best grown in a greenhouse.

They are easily propagated from seed but cultivars produce better fruit.

Fruit fly is a problem in some areas.
