Description
Evergreen shrub from subtropical Brazil and Argentina. Reaches
about 3m (10ft) with a similar spread, but can grow twice as
tall in sheltered positions.
Also known as "Acca", Feijoas are grown for their
showy, edible flowers and fruits. The fruits appear only after
a hot summer and may be damaged by autumn frosts. The oval,
glossy green leaves have a silvery underside.
This species can be pruned into a single-trunked small tree
or it can be clipped as a hedge. The flowers, carried on the
new seasons growth, have red petals that are white underneath
and almost overshadowed by prominent, dark red stamens. The
elongated fruit grow up to 10cm (4in) long, have a sweet-tangy
flavor and are eaten raw or made into jam and preserves.
