Description

Freesia is a spring flowering bulb with a delicious fragrance and one of the best bulbs for warm climates.

Suitable for mass-planting and very attractive as clumps or in rockeries.

The bell-like flowers are originally creamy white, but many colours are now available. The range includes yellow, orange, rosy-red, ruby, blue and nurseries usually have mixed colours for sale as well.

Growing

Best grown in a sunny position but will do well under trees or shrubs as long as they are not too shaded.

Corms should be planted in autumn in a friable and well drained soil that is prepared with a measure of mixed fertiliser. Plant to a depth of 7cm and the same distance apart. You can leave the corms permanently in the ground for several years, or lift them after the plant has died for storing and replanting.
