Description

Herbaceous trailing plant, native to tropical America, where it grows wild as a ground cover.

It is mostly grown in hanging baskets for cascading foliage and is tolerant of indoor conditions where it adds a dainty, delicate touch to a room and will grow to handsome proportions. But it is equally useful and attractive as a groundcover, potted plant, or as an accent plant for the home or office.

The foliage consists of awl-shaped leaflets (2.5cm long) set on slender, wiry, cascading stems. Tiny, three petaled white flowers bloom profusely, especially in winter.

Growing

Although a hardy plant, Gibasis does need a bit of care to achive best results. Repot annually if plant grows rapidly and use a potting mixture that contains 50% organic matter.

Light: Bright light to filtered (but no direct sun). Indoors best near a sunny north or east window.

Temperature: 15ºC to 30ºC (65º F to 85º F)

Moisture: Evenly moist to dryish (humidity: 25-60%). Will tolerate some surface drying without damage.

Feeding: Every 2 months, except in winter.

Propagation: Cuttings of 7-10cm (3-4in) and by division.

Potential problems: Spindly growth, mould, stem rot. Check for mealybugs at leaf nodes and axils.
