Gossypium

Common name: Cotton

sunwater

Description

Gossypium belongs to the hibiscus family and includes annuals, woody perennuals, evergreen shrubs and small trees found in warm-temperate and tropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas.
Best known are the 4 to 5 species grown as commercial crop plants (cotton).

The flowers resemble those of Hibiscus (to which it is closely related) and may be cream, yellow or rose colored, sometimes with a dark spot at the base. They are followed by globular pods which split open to release their seeds, embedded in cotton fibers.

Apart from the cotton-yielding species, several others are grown as ornamental plants, mostly the Australian species with pink or mauve flowers. These are best suited to fairly hot, semi-arid climates.

Growing

Prefer rich moist soil in a protected but sunny position.

Propagation from seed sown in spring (in some species from cuttings).
