Description

This genus consists of about 120 species of usually fast growing, deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs from east Asia and North America. Many cultivars are available. The leaves are oval and smooth edged. The large, handsome flowers are fragrant and come in white, yellow, pink or purple. Depending on the species/cultivar they may be shaped like a funnel, bell, cup, saucer, or a star. The fruits are cone-like or cylindrical.

Growing

Grow Magnolias in well-drained, well-aerated and somewhat acid soil. Light shade is generally ideal, although they can be grown in the sun. Protection from strong or salty winds is advisable, especially since the flower buds are frost sensitive. The roots are fragile so the plants do not transplant readily and are best left undisturbed. Pruning is generally not necessary.

Propagate from cuttings in summer or from seed in autumn. Grafting is best done in winter.
