Description

Petunias are colourful and long flowering annuals, but there are also some perennial forms available. (The perennial Marco Polo for instance, has a lovely deep purple/blue shade and one mature size plant will cover 1 square metre, thus ideal for a great ground cover.)

Petunias come in a tremendous range of colour combinations and look striking in hanging baskets forming a ball of color, trailing from window boxes or when planted in containers.

Ideal for mass bedding, borders and containers.

Growing

All Petunias thrive in full sun. The hotter the summer, the better the blooms!

A neutral soil is best for them, but they will grow in a wide range of soils and once they have become established, they need little attention and don’t require a lot of water either. In fact, too much water can make them become very straggly and lank, and it will result in fewer blooms. (Remember, containers dry out a lot quicker than garden beds!)

Propagate by seed in spring (make sure there is no more chance of frost) through to mid summer. In warmer areas that have long growing seasons you can sow until autumn.
Petunias are free flowering over the warmer months of the year.Tip prune them during this time as required (after flowers are spent), to keep the plant tidy and to encourage a second flush of blooms.

As cooler weather approaches, they can then be pruned back and fed well, to rest before they start shooting again in spring and summer.

Will do well in all climates but the coldest.
