Description
This North American genus has some 12 species that are all
very easy to grow. They are rhizomatous perennials and vigorous
growers that develop quickly each spring. The tooth-edged leaves
are long and narrow and grow on clumps of unbranched, upright
stems. From mid-summer spikes of tubular to bell-shaped flowers
in lavender, pink, purple and white develop at the stem tips.
And interestingly, when moving a flower it will not spring back
into position, but will instead obediently stay put! Hence its
common name 'Obedient plant'.
Its showy flowers make it a great plant for mixed borders or
a visual focus. Plant sizes vary from 0.61.8 m (26
ft) and the leaves are 515 cm (26 in)
long.
Physostegia virginiana
Available varieties come in shades of lavender (Vivid)
and pink (Summer Spire), or white (Summer
Snow).
