Description

This North American genus has some 12 species that are all very easy to grow. They are rhizomatous perennials and vigorous growers that develop quickly each spring. The tooth-edged leaves are long and narrow and grow on clumps of unbranched, upright stems. From mid-summer spikes of tubular to bell-shaped flowers in lavender, pink, purple and white develop at the stem tips. And interestingly, when moving a flower it will not spring back into position, but will instead obediently stay put! Hence its common name 'Obedient plant'.

Its showy flowers make it a great plant for mixed borders or a visual focus. Plant sizes vary from 0.6–1.8 m (2–6 ft) and the leaves are 5–15 cm (2–6 in) long.

Physostegia virginiana
Available varieties come in shades of lavender (‘Vivid’) and pink (‘Summer Spire’), or white (‘Summer Snow’).

Growing

Obedient plants are very easy to grow. Give them moist, well-drained soil and position them in a sunny or in a light shaded spot. They will grow well as long as they get plenty of light and can even get somewhat invasive.

Generally all species of Physostegia will tolerate light frosts, though their hardiness does vary.

Propagate in summer from seed, from small basal cuttings or by division.
