Solanum

Solanum

sunwater

Description

This genus has over 1,400 species including trees, shrubs, annuals, biennials, perennials and climbers from a range of habitats worldwide. Some evergreen, some semi-evergreen or deciduous.

The genus includes important food plants like the potato and eggplant, but many species are dangerously poisonous.

Ornamental species are grown for their flowers and fruits. The leaves are arranged alternately, the usually showy flowers are solitary or in clusters, star-shaped to bell-shaped, ranging in color from white and yellow to blue and purple. The fruits are berries that contain many seeds.

Growing

Solanums are warm-climate plants that have a wide range of requirements, though most are quite tender and only few are really frost tolerant.

Most prefer full sun or partial shade and are easy to grow in any rich, well-aerated and well-drained soil.

Propagation: Commonly grown from seed in spring or from cuttings in summer.

Pests: Prone to attack by spider mite, whitefly and aphids.
