                        Cow's Udder Plant

Solanum mammosum

sunwater

Description

Perennial tropical herb or soft-wooded subshrub, indigenous to Central America. Grows to about 1.2 m (4ft) tall with angular, spiny stems and large hairy leaves.

Flowers are smallish, white. Striking yellow or orange fruit about 5 cm (2 in) long, sometimes waisted, bloated structures resemble a cow’s udder with several nipples at the calyx end. Branches bearing the fruit are often cut for indoor use, with the leaves removed; they last for several weeks.

Growing

Solanums are warm-climate plants that have a wide range of requirements; most prefer full sun and rich, well-drained soil.

Commonly grown from seed in spring or cuttings in summer.

Potential problems: Prone to attack by spider mite, whitefly and aphids.
