Description
Perennial tropical herb or soft-wooded subshrub, indigenous
to Central America. Grows to about 1.2 m (4ft) tall with angular,
spiny stems and large hairy leaves.
Flowers are smallish, white. Striking yellow or orange fruit
about 5 cm (2 in) long, sometimes waisted, bloated structures
resemble a cows udder with several nipples at the calyx
end. Branches bearing the fruit are often cut for indoor use,
with the leaves removed; they last for several weeks.
