Description

This handsome evergreen climber from Madagascar is part of 5-15 species of twining woody-stemmed climbers found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Madagascar and Asia.

It grows to a height and spread of 3m (10 ft), is primarily grown for its pleasant and strong fragrance and has attractive foliage of waxy, deep green leaves. The pure white trumpet-like flowers with widely flared lobes up to 6 cm long appear in small clusters of blooms from spring to autumn. The flowers last well cut for decorative purposes and are often used in bridal bouquets.

Growing

Needs a warm sheltered position.

Plant in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Stephanotis are frost tender and may be grown indoors or in greenhouses where temperatures fall below 15°C. The stems need to be supported and shortened in spring if they become overcrowded.

Propagate from seed in spring or cuttings in summer.
