Description

Violas are closely related to Pansies and belong in fact to the same genus. They are somewhat smaller and come in many colours and colour combinations. Actually biennials, they are treated as annuals.

Excellent for rock gardens, carpet bedding or borders. Will flower very quickly from seed and for a very long period from early spring to summer.

Growing

Violas like Pansies prefer sun, but a partly shaded aspect that protects them from the hot afternoon sun is an advantage.

They need a well drained friable, fertile soil. However, beds should be prepared well before planting as the tender roots should not be in contact with concentrated fertiliser. Mix compost or animal manure into the top 15 cm of soil.

Propagate annuals by seed from midsummer to early winter (autumn and early spring in cold areas).
Propagate perennial species by division or from cuttings.

Fertilise with a weak liquid feed every 2-3 weeks once established.

Main Pests: Aphids (under the foliage)
