Zantedeschia

Common name: Arum Lily,
                        Calla Lily,
                        Pig Lily

Zantedeschia

sunwater

Description

White heart-shaped, funnel-like flowers with long yellow stamens on long fleshy stalks (50-80cm) in spring to early summer. Glossy and broad dark green leaves.

A yellow variety is available, and hybrids come in pinks, apricots and violet.

Popular for flower arrangements.

Growing

This genus includes frost-tender to marginally frost-hardy species. Zantedeschia prefer well-drained soil and are best grown in friable loam with plenty of compost or rotted organic matter. Most are intolerant of dry conditions and are thus suitable for semi-shaded and damp positions. They grow naturally on stream margins, so give them plenty of water!

Fertilise yearly in late winter.

As this is a rhizomic plant, propagation is best by division in late winter.
