To-Do List for Autumn:

Only Flowers and Vegetables that can be planted in any climate are listed here.
For climate-specific gardening guidance choose a month from the menu. (members only)

 

 

 

March

  • Lawns - Light fertilizing, aerate compacted areas.
  • Plant - bulbs, strawberries, stephanotis.
  • Plant Annuals - Alyssum, Aquilegia, Arctotis, Big gyp, Calendula, Candytuft, Canterbury bells, Cineraria, Cornflower, Delphinium, Dianthus, Everlasting daisy, Forget-me-not, Godetia, Gypsophila, Hollyhock, Honesty, Impatiens, Linaria, Livingstone daisy, Lobelia, Lupin, Marigold, Nemophila, Nigella, Pansy, Polyanthus, Poppy, Primula, Schizanthus, Statice, Stock, Strawflower, Sweet pea, Vinca, Viola, Virginia stock, Wallflower.
  • Plant vegetables - Cabbages, Chinese Cabbage, Cress, Herbs, Lettuces, Mustard, Spring Onions, Radishes, Shallots, Turnips.
  • Prune - Geraniums, Fuchsias (use prunings for propagation by cuttings)
  • Weeds - eliminate now before they get a foothold.
 

April

  • Plant Bulbs - anemones, babania, bluebells, crocus, daffodils, freesias, jonquils, lilies, hyacinths, iris, ranunculus, snowdrops, tritelias, tulips, etc.
  • Plant Annuals - Alyssum, Aquilegia, Arctotis, Big gyp, Calendula, Candytuft, Canterbury bells, Carnation, Cineraria, Cornflower, Delphinium, Dianthus, Everlasting daisy, Forget-me-not, Gaillardia, Godetia, Gypsophila, Hollyhock, Honesty, Impatiens, Larkspur, Linaria, Livingstone daisy, Lobelia, Lupin, Marigold, Nemophila, Nigella, Pansy, Poppy, Snapdragon.
  • Plant trees/shrubs - best time of the year is now.
  • Plant vegetables - Broad beans, Cress, Lettuces, Mustard, Onions, Spring Onions, Radishes, Shallots, Spinach.
  • Pruning - impatiens, fuchsias and hydrangeas if straggly.
  • Weeds and Pests - control weeds & garden pests before they get a chance to multiply.
 
     
 

May

  • Bulbs - If you still haven’t planted them out, it’s now or never! Lift summer bulbs now.
  • Indoor plants - Ease off with watering. Leave repotting and fertilising until spring.
  • Move plants - Shrubs and trees can be moved from now until August (ie. before bud burst).
  • Plant annuals - Big gyp, Carnation, Gypsophila, Marigold.
  • Plant vegetables - Cress, Lettuces, Mustard, Onions, Shallots, Spinach.
  • Weeding - Do it regularly to stay on top of infestations.
